FAQs
Does the school have hiring preferences?
We are an American International School and our parents expect predominantly North American certified teachers. This is especially relevant in the Early Years and the Elementary School. Because of local ministry regulations a minimum of 3 years experience are required.
How are most teachers hired?
We do a lot of direct hiring through extensive use of Skype or telephone interviews. We also are present at most of the North American recruitment fairs.
What is Cairo like for expat teachers?
We encourage candidates to find out more by talking to present teachers here. The school is located in a quiet suburb and Cairo is not just what one sees on Al Jazeera TV. Many teachers feel privileged to be in Egypt at this important time in its history, it is a wonderful country full of very warm and welcoming people. But it is also a 3rd world country, with widespread poverty, environmentally problematic, inspiring and exhausting at the same time.
Where do most teachers live?
The majority lives in Sheikh Zayed City, close to the school. This is in the Western Desert, the air is cleaner, the neighborhood is rapidly filling with new malls and restaurants. Other teachers live in town, in Mohandeseen and Maadi. This obviously gives more of the feeling of being in Egypt, with greater access to entertainment and culture. The downside is the daily commute with busses provided by the school.
There is a housing allowance of 4,500 Egyptian Pounds a month. Many of our single teachers share a two bedroom apartment; pooling the allowance makes it easy to find very good accommodation. Teachers are assisted by the school and selected real estate agents to find good accommodation.
