In May 2022, students at AIS West performed "The Little Mermaid Jr." The performance had a cast of 20 students and 10 backstage crew members. Cast and crew were composed of secondary students between grades 6-12. There were two evening performances for audiences made up of students, parents, teachers, and administrators. The show was very well received. Playing the part of Ariel, the "little mermaid" was Salma and Yara. Both actresses demonstrated exceptional vocal skills and delighted the crowd with their renditions of "Part of Your World." Karima and Hussein played Sebastian the crab and showed off their singing abilities with the show-stopping number, "Under the Sea."
The play was directed by Larissa Cahill; music direction was by Patricia Granter; the choreography was by Lina Rodriguez, and the set was designed by Kaitlin Kurdziel. Cast and crew were thrilled to be onstage again after a long hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Audiences were charmed and enchanted by the story, songs, dances, and exquisite handmade costumes. After last year's success, AIS West Drama will be adding two performances for the 2022–2023 school year. A murder mystery will be performed the first week of February, and a musical is scheduled for June.
